Why you need a car in Jeju

Jeju is an island roughly 73 km across, and its best places sit where buses go least often. A rental car is not a convenience here — it is what makes the itinerary possible.

Buses reach the coast, not the corners

Buses reach the coast, not the corners

Jeju's intercity buses follow the two ring roads well, but the oreum trailheads, coastal cafés and inland waterfalls that fill most itineraries sit twenty to forty minutes off those routes. Without a car you plan around the timetable; with one you plan around the light.

The island is a loop, not a hub

There is no single base to stay in. A typical trip spends one night in Jeju City and the next in Seogwipo, and moving luggage between them by bus costs the better part of an afternoon.

Weather changes by side of the island

Hallasan splits Jeju's weather in two. Driving forty minutes to the other coast to get out of the rain is a normal thing to do here — but only if you can leave when you want to.

This is the easy version of driving in Korea

Jeju has no expressways and no toll roads, wide provincial roads and signage in English throughout. Traffic concentrates in Jeju City and Seogwipo; the rest of the island is open road. It is where most visitors who have never driven in Korea start.

Where to drive: 3, 4 and 5-day routes

Jeju's ring road is about 200 km. These routes assume you pick up in the morning and stay on one side of the island at a time, which is how the island actually drives.

  • Three days — the east and the south

Three days — the east and the south

Day one, drive east on the 1132 to Seongsan Ilchulbong and walk up the crater ridge rather than stopping at the car park. Stay in Seogwipo. Day two is the south coast: Jeongbang and Cheonjiyeon waterfalls sit ten minutes apart, and the Jusangjeolli cliffs are a short drive west. Day three, come back north over the 1131 through the Hallasan foothills — it puts you at the terminal in under an hour. About 220 km in total.

  • Four days — add the west coast

Four days — add the west coast

Keep the three-day route and add the west before you return. From Seogwipo, follow the coast past Sanbangsan and the Yongmeori shore, then north to Hallim and the Aewol café stretch. Aewol to the terminal is thirty minutes, so you can leave late on the last morning. Adds roughly 90 km and one night — spend it in Hallim or Aewol rather than driving back to Jeju City.

  • Five days — add Hallasan or Udo

Five days — add Hallasan or Udo

Five days buys you one day that is not a driving day. Either take the Yeongsil trail, the shortest way up to the Witse Oreum shelter, whose car park fills before 09:00 — an argument for having your own car. Or take the fifteen-minute ferry from Seongsan to Udo and drive the island's single loop road. Both are full-day commitments; do not try to fold them into a travel day.

What you need to drive in Korea

Three documents, checked once at the terminal. Bring the physical originals — a photo on your phone is not accepted for the licence or the permit.

What you need to drive in Korea

Do I really need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

Yes. Korean rental companies are legally required to verify both your IDP and your original home-country license at pickup. We cannot rent to you without both documents — even if you have a US passport or Korean ancestry.

Which IDP types does Korea accept?

IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention or 1968 Vienna Convention are accepted. The 1968 IDP is valid until its printed expiry. Note: residents of mainland China, Iran, Cuba, Syria, and North Korea cannot drive in Korea on an IDP — these countries are not signatories.

Can I rent with just my home country's driving license?

No. A standalone license (US, UK, etc.) without an IDP is not accepted at the counter. The IDP must be obtained in your home country before traveling.

What's the minimum age?

21 years old with at least 1 year of driving experience. Drivers aged 21-25 may pay a young-driver surcharge depending on vehicle class. Maximum age is 79.

Can I add a second driver?

Yes — additional drivers are free, but each one must present their own IDP, home license, and passport at pickup. Add the second driver during the booking details step.

I have a Korean driver's license. Do I still need an IDP?

No. A valid Korean license alone is sufficient — no IDP needed. You'll be treated as a domestic renter.

Can I rent a child or booster seat?

Child seats are not offered at this time — please bring your own.

Full pickup and return guide

Insurance is already included

Every Koro rental includes full self-CDW. There is no upsell at the counter and no excess to buy back separately.

Insurance is already included

What insurance is included in the rental rate?

Every rental includes mandatory liability insurance and our Collision Damage Waiver (full self-CDW) — there is nothing optional to buy. Coverage limits: personal injury to the driver up to ₩15,000,000, counterparty injury unlimited, and counterparty property up to ₩20,000,000. Insurance does not cover the 12 major traffic violations or driving by anyone not registered on the contract.

What is CDW (Collision Damage Waiver)?

Every rental includes our Collision Damage Waiver (full self-CDW) — there are no tiers to choose. Coverage: personal injury (driver) up to ₩15,000,000, counterparty injury unlimited, and counterparty property up to ₩20,000,000. The deductible is ₩0 for covered damage — insurance does not cover accidents caused by one of the 12 major traffic violations or driving by someone not registered on the contract.

Is there a deductible?

With the full self-CDW included on every rental, your deductible is ₩0 for covered damage. The exceptions are the 12 major traffic violations and driving by anyone not registered on the contract — those are not covered.

What's NOT covered by insurance?

Damage from drunk driving, driving without a valid license/IDP, off-road driving, intentional damage, interior smoking/soiling, and tire/glass damage in some plans. Read the rental contract carefully at pickup.

What if I have a fender bender — what's the process?

Make sure everyone is safe. For any accident involving another party, report it to the police. Then send the damaged area, photos, and details to our customer center via WhatsApp or WeChat — we'll confirm whether the car is drivable and guide you through the insurance claim. Report during the rental; otherwise coverage may be denied.

Does insurance cover towing and roadside assistance?

Roadside assistance is included for mechanical breakdowns. Towing due to an accident is covered by your insurance plan. Towing due to driver fault (out of fuel, locked keys inside, flat tire on a remote road) may incur a fee.

Jeju car rental FAQ

The questions we get most from visitors renting in Jeju.

How does the airport shuttle work?

After clearing customs at Jeju International Airport, walk to Shuttle Stop 2 (signposted in English). The Socar shuttle runs every 20 minutes — from Jeju Airport to the terminal the first is 07:20 and the last 23:00; from the terminal to the airport the first is 07:00 and the last 22:40. The ride takes about 5 minutes — no booking needed.

What if my flight is delayed?

Send your reservation number and new flight number via WhatsApp or WeChat. We'll hold your reservation for 5 hours after your booked pickup time. No fee for delays.

Can I pick up the car late at night or very early in the morning?

Pickup and return both operate 8:00–20:00 at the Jeju Socar Terminal. There is no early or after-hours pickup. If you return after 20:00, drop the physical key in the key box at the desk — late returns are charged ₩10,000 per hour of delay plus the service fee for the time actually used.

What do I need to bring at pickup?

(1) Your IDP, (2) your original home-country license, (3) your passport, (4) the credit card used for the booking. The booking number from the confirmation email is helpful but not strictly required.

Can my friend pick up the car instead?

Only if they're listed as the primary or additional driver on the reservation. They must bring their own IDP, license, passport, and the credit card used for payment (or accept that some changes may not be possible without the cardholder).

What's the fuel policy?

Return the car at the same fuel level as at pickup (refuel the amount you used). If it's short on return, we charge the fuel cost plus a service fee. A receipt from your last refuel near the return location is appreciated.

Where do I return the car?

Same Socar Terminal as pickup, unless you selected a different return location at booking.

Are there cleaning or smoking penalties?

Smoking in the car or returning it heavily soiled incurs a cleaning penalty.

Can I cancel my booking?

Yes. Free cancellation up to 12 hours before pickup (or within 30 minutes of booking) — 100% refund to the original card. Within 12 hours before pickup a 20% fee applies. Once the rental has started, a 30% fee applies and the cancellation is handled by our support team only. No-shows are non-refundable.

How do I cancel?

Go to 'My Reservation' in the top menu, enter your email and reservation number, and click 'Cancel' on the detail page. Or email global_cs@socar.kr with your reservation number.

How long until my refund appears?

Refunds are issued to the original card immediately. Most international cards see the refund in 3-7 business days, depending on the issuing bank.

Can I modify my reservation instead of canceling?

Date, time, vehicle, and location changes all require a cancellation and re-booking (subject to availability and the current rate).

What if I'm a no-show?

No-show forfeits the full rental amount. We hold the reservation for 5 hours after your booked pickup time before cancelling it as a no-show — if you'll be late, message us on WhatsApp with your flight number so we can hold your reservation or reschedule your shuttle.

Can I extend my rental while I'm using the car?

Yes — to extend an ongoing rental, contact our customer center on WhatsApp or WeChat.
